Aikido is a Japanese martial art and an effective form of self-defense that focuses on peaceful resolution of conflict. Aikido is essentially a grappling art that features joint locks, hip throws and free style or breath throws. There are over 3,000 known variations to the dozen or so basic forms.

Aikido is practiced on a matted surface. Students are given self-defense forms to learn by the teacher. One person acts as the attacker, the other the defender. Students eventually evolve to free style practice where up to five attackers converge on the defender simultaneously.
